Mental Health Resources For Teenagers, Young People and Their Families

Hi everyone Heart

 

Over the past little while, I’ve noticed that more members of our community have been reaching out to the forums in search of resources that they can use to support some of the younger members of their families Heart

 

As such, I thought that it may be helpful to create a thread where we can share some of the resources that are specifically designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of teenagers, young people and their families Heart

 

You’re all more than welcome to share anything else that you feel may be helpful and / or of interest to members of our community who are searching for some additional support Heart

 

I’ve just shared a few of the resources that I’m familiar with below …

 

Resources For Teenagers And Young People:

 

Apps:

 

Kids Helpline have a section on their website called apps you’ll wanna know all about Heart

 

As such, they list a variety of apps that children and young people can use to further support their mental health and wellbeing.

 

Some of the apps mentioned on their website include: Worry Watch : Anxiety Self-Care, Happify, Woebot, Sober Grid and one my personal favourites - Calm Harm, which supports young people to manage the urge to self-harm Heart

Reach Out

 

Reach Out is an online mental health service for young people 12 to 25 years of age, their parents and carers Heart

 

As such, they provide an online forum where young people can connect with one another, share their experiences and receive support from their peers.

 

They also provide a wealth of information in relation to mental health conditions and other topics such as bullying, relationships and trauma.

Livewire 

 

Livewire is an online forum that has been created especially for young people 12 to 20 years of age, who are living with a chronic health condition, a serious illness, a disability, or a mental health condition Heart

 

Essentially, the online forum provides the opportunity for young people to connect with peers who are experiencing similar issues to their own.

Beyond Blue

 

Beyond Blue focus on supporting people who are affected by anxiety, depression and suicide Heart

 

As such, they have created an online forum especially for young people aged 12 to 25 years of age, who are having a difficult time.

 

The forums provide the opportunity for young people to connect with each other, share their experiences and receive support from their peers.

 

Beyond Blue also provide a wealth of information in relation to some of the life issues that may be relevant to young people such as mental health conditions, identity and gender, body image, relationships, studying and exams.

In addition to participating in the online forums, young people can also chat online with a trained mental health professional for advice and support in relation to their experiences of depression and anxiety.

 

Online chat is available from 11.00am until 12.00am (AEST) 7 days a week.

Alternately, young people are more than welcome to contact the Beyond Blue Helpline, whereby they can talk with a trained mental health professional in relation to their experiences of depression and anxiety.

 

Young people can contact the Helpline on: 1300 22 46 36.

 

The Helpline is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

 

Headspace

 

Headspace provides early intervention mental health services to young people 12 to 25 years of age Heart

 

In addition to providing mental health services, Headspace also provide alcohol and other drug services and support in relation to study and employment.

Furthermore, Headspace provide a national telephone and online support service called eheadspace.

 

eheadspace is staffed by experienced youth mental health professionals who provide free counselling and support for young people 12 to 25 years of age over the telephone, via email or online chat.

In addition to the above, eheadspace provides an online group chat session called Group Chats.

 

Group Chats is hosted by mental health professionals and as such, they provide young people with the opportunity to participate in online chats about a variety of different topics.

Kids Helpline

 

Kids Helpline provide counselling and support to children and young people 5 to 25 years of age, in relation to any concerns that they may have Heart

 

Children and young people can contact Kids Helpline on: 1800 55 1800.

 

Kids Helpline are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

 

In addition to providing support via the telephone, Kids Helpline also provide support to children and young people via email and webchat.

Furthermore, Kids Helpline provide a free, private, safe and anonymous online platform for young people 13 to 25 years of age called My Circle.

 

My Circle is supported by Kids Helpline counsellors and as such, it provides the opportunity for young people to talk with other young people who are experiencing similar challenges to their own.

Resources For Parents And Carers

 

Reach Out Parents

 

Reach Out Parents provides a wealth of information and resources to help parents and carers support young people 12-18 years of age Heart

 

They also provide an online community forum where parents and carers can talk with each other about their experiences and work through their concerns in a safe and anonymous environment.

In addition to the online forums, Reach Out Parents provide a free coaching service for parents and carers.

 

Essentially, qualified mental health professionals support families to strengthen their ability to support young people (12 to 18 years of age) through some of the challenges that they’re experiencing.

Mental health Foundation Australia

 

Mental Health Foundation Australia provide a variety of support groups that are delivered online and face to face Heart

 

One of the support groups that they provide is called the Parents And Carers Wellbeing Support Group.

 

As such, parents and carers are invited to share their experiences in relation to caring for a child or a person who is living with a mental health condition and receive support from other people who share similar experiences.

Kids Helpline

As such, they provide a wealth of information in relation to a wide variety of topics such as cyberbullying, mental health issues, relationships, substance use and Covid-19.

Headspace

 

Headspace provides a national telephone and online support service called eheadspace Heart

 

In addition to supporting young people, mental health clinicians also provide support for parents and other adults who are caring for young people 12 to 25 years of age.

 

As such family members and other adults, can talk with a mental health clinician about a variety of issues. For example, they may have concerns about a young person’s mental health, require support to find information about services for young people and their families, or they may feel isolated and alone in their experiences of caring for a young person.

As such, they have created an online forum where adults can share their experiences in relation to living with a mental health condition (or caring for someone who is living with a mental health condition) and receive support from their peers.

 

Although there are a variety of different threads to explore, one of the threads focuses specifically on relationship and family issues which includes parenting.

Beyond Blue also provides a wealth of information in relation to a wide variety of topics that may be of interest to parents and / or people who are caring for teenagers and young people. As such, some of the topics include how to communicate with teenagers, how to talk with young people about their mental health and when to be worried about a young person’s mental health.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

 

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a course that’s designed specifically for adults who are working or living with adolescents 12 to 18 years of age Heart

 

Essentially, this particular course teaches adults how to support adolescents who are developing a mental health condition or who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

As such, this course focuses on topics such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

I agree with everyone else @ShiningStar , it's great to have these resources in one place.  Thank you for your initiative.

 

Another resource that may help parents caring for teens is the Tuning into Teens parent education program, which is usually run over 6 weeks with weekly sessions.  The program helps with emotional attunement; the ability to tune into a child's/teen's inner world and their perceptions and emotional responses.  It is delivered around Australia by trained presenters, and some providers deliver it online if there isn't a presenter in your area.  Unfortunately, it is not usually funded so there may be a fee.  However some presenters have fully funded places available, so it's worth asking around.  

 

Orygen is also another useful resource for research, policy guides and information about early psychosis for example.  https://www.orygen.org.au
